Great. It's still odd that after "splitting by channel", each of the 
individual MIDI tracks played on channel 1.

Unless you imported a MIDI file with different tracks (all channel 1).

It is an official midi.org spec to provide human readable names for 
various MIDI elements and attributes.

It allows one to name programs/patches, provide names for notes 
(commonly used for drums), specify which controls are available for 
which channel, etc.

Ardour comes with some 400+ MIDNAM files for common hardware synths, and 
LV2 plugins can directly provide one.
