Hi,

Unfortunately you probably have the latest version.  At least the bug page
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?archive=1;src=paulstretch)
lists the issues you found above and more, leading the the removal of
paulstretch from the Debian archive as you also noticed.  Some issues
(like the build error) have solutions, but not the crash, as far as I
can see.  So work would be needed to get it working again (or a Debian
buster container or VM).

Or check out https://sonosaurus.com/paulxstretch/, which seems to be its
successor.
