Tool for inspecting audio hardware?

Hello everyone,

Is there a tool of some kind that can be ran on a Linux system that will tell you everything that the kernel knows about your audio hardware?  I have an unfamiliar system in front of me, and instead of guessing and prodding around for hours, I thought it might be best to just ask if such a tool exists.
