Calling an external tool is a clean separation and also allows users to use their own version with non-free codecs. Sadly FFmpeg's CLI is not stable. Options and parameters change with every other major version. So Ardour only supports some specific versions of ffmpeg/ffprobe. It would have been easier to directly use libavcodec/avformat/etc. but that would only have been possible with a limited set of codecs for the binary distribution. -- robin
