What happens if you boot it smp?  What are the symptoms?

Also, just so we can get a step further, boot it up and change the
kernel.stop-a and kernel.sysrq settings in /etc/sysctl.conf .  You'll need
to run "/sbin/sysctl -p" to have the change take effect.  When it fails,
see if stop+p shows anything; if so, copying it down and sending it to the
list (along with info about which kernel package you're using) will help.  
After that, try stop+a , which should drop you back to the prom's "ok"
prompt.  If it does, "ctrace" should show us a traceback, and we can at
least start to look at what's going wrong.
