So, here's the update on that status:

There is a bug in binutils that prevents the "eu-strip" utility included
in elfutils from working properly. However, older binaries should be
fine. This means, no need for mass rebuilds. Jakub is working on a patch
for this, but right now, the elfutils hack is ok as a workaround.

There is also a separate bug in glibc that was causing glibc for sparcv7
to be broken. Jakub helped me identify it this morning and sent me a
fix, which is currently building. Hopefully, this will resolve the glibc
issue.

So, I'm a lot happier about where we're standing at the end of
today. :)
