Anybody using PGX32 or Raptor GFX8P?

Hi all,

I'm still no further with my U5 and the Raptor GFX8P (aka PGX32). I'm
surprised nobody else is having this problem... Here's a quick summary
of what's happening (all with a fresh install of Aurora 1.0):

- When setting up X the normal way (Xconfigurator), X doesn't work
  properly:
  * In 24bit mode, many icons get a yellow tint, which makes the whole
    thing look quite ugly
  * In 16bit mode, almost all colours are wrong, making X almost
    unusable
  * 8bit mode *seems* to work, however, I can't judge it properly as
    I'm using Window Maker, which itself has a problem with 8bit
    displays (has had that since 0.62.2, I think - never got fixed)
  * In all modes, the console gets garbled after leaving X: The last
    line of the screen duplicates information from higher above,
    stripes run across the screen in some situations, ...

  I had a look at the site and it suggested to install the
  XFree86-3DLabs-3.3.6 server RPM and use that server instead.
  As that RPM is included with Aurora 1.0, I decided to try that.
  * First problem: The XFree86-3DLabs-3.3.6 asks for
    XFree86-compat-modules-3.3.6 to be installed first. That RPM is
    missing on both the ISO images and the FTP sites. I also installed
    the SRPM and tried to build the missing RPM. However, the build
    seems to be purposely excluded (%ifnarch sparc), though I'm not
    sure why. I removed those statements to force the build, but the
    build failed. I wasn't able to figure out why, so I installed the
    3DLabs server with --nodeps. As 'ldd XF86_3DLabs' doesn't show any
    missing libraries, I'm wondering whether the requirement isn't
    needed on Sparc.
  * After installing the 3DLabs server, I removed /usr/X11R6/bin/X
    (changing /etc/X11/X had no influence) and replaced it with a link
    to the old X server, as suggested by the document listed above.
    The first error I got was that the X server didn't run as root. To
    be able to continue testing, I made XF86_3DLab SUID root (even
    though it's not recommended). Now, when running 'startx', I can
    see some activity, but the start fails with the error message:
    "No GLINT/PERMEDIA based card found"
    This leads me to the question whether the 3.3.6 server might have
    issues on Sparc - or is this related to the missing
    "compat-modules"?


In any case, the big question remains: Is there anybody out there who
was able to get his PGX32 or Raptor GFX8P running properly with X and
if so, what did you have to do to get it working?
