rebuilding SRPMS

I saw a question on this in the archives, but no responses, so I'll ask
too and offer myself up for flamage.

Say I have a SRPM, perhaps coming from places where they have only x86
boxes. I try to build that on my Ultra 2 and I get either this:

/usr/bin/ld: warning: sparc:v9 architecture of input file `main.o' is
incompatible with sparc output

or this:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -m64 -mcpu=ultrasparc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create executables.

The first error is specifically from sendmail, and the second is from
BIND 9.2.1, both from redhat 7.3 updates. I have a custom in-house
autofs that I need to build that I get the first error on too, but I'm
debugging the build process on standard RH packages first.

Can anyone help give some insight on how to fix either problem? I saw
some things about gcc being broken on 64bit, is that what I have going
on here?

Thanks for anything
