bug#63: Bug modified from CVS checkin

Clarifies: #63

I believe we may have closed these bugs too soon.  It looks like
the problem is immediately solved by aborting the practice of
doing an LD_PRELOAD on the host's libc.  That was a holdover from
when we didn't have our BUILDDEPS quite so isolated.

So we'll try building without it.  We may see other bugs on red
hat and so forth, but those may be solved independently.  This
should remove an entire class of bugs that simply made GAR
useless on non-2.2.5 systems.
