compiling for the first time

I tried to compile for the first time today. After about an hour or so of
compiling, the following occured:

../../gcc-2.95.3/gcc/libgcc2.c:41: stdlib.h: No such file or directory
../../gcc-2.95.3/gcc/libgcc2.c:42: unistd.h: No such file or directory

>From there I got several make errors and make exited.

What might be the problem and how should I fix it?
