chroot for head?

Trying to build HEAD from yesterday using Paul Gray's Mandrake chroot.
(Paul, thanks for making that available.  I'm not a Debian user, and
had trouble upgrading the chroot from lnx-bbc.org.)  I'm getting "C
compiler cannot create executables" from e2fsprogs.  Anyone else
getting this?  Hints?  

What do others use to build HEAD?
