I don't know of any branch that is known to successfully build on
gentoo, but research is probably the closest.  The trouble you ran
into with perl is mostly a product of perl's godaweful configure
script.  We generally try to avoid messing with perl any more than we
have to, although the package is probably due for an upgrade.  If
you'd like to try your hand, I'd start with that.
