I haven't played with GAR for a couple of months or so, and over the 
last couple of days decided to catch up and do a current build. I used 
to build directly on my RH 7.2 machine but decided to have a go with the 
debian chroot. My build also fails with a kernel too old message, but I 
think (I'm not near my laptop at the moment) that it was during the 
glibc configure stage, rather than during the compile as in your 
example. I'll post more later.
