You need a VESA 2.0 compatible video card. These are quite thick on the ground, however some very high end cards Do Their Own Thing, and some really old video cards that were good in their time only speak VESA 1.2 ... and the kernel framebuffer doesn't handle those. > I'm currently using linux in these machines so I suppose you cutted off > some drivers from XFree. No, the kernel framebuffer and Xfree don't use the same code, afaik. However, our instance of X would use the framebuffer, if it had worked for you, by just talking to the kernel interface for it. > One of these video cards is a Permedia2 (3dlabs driver), more precisely > a Texas Instruments TVP4020 [Permedia 2]. > > Greentings. Hmm. I would have thought those would be new enough to have proper VESA support. Oh well. Normal kernels have several customized framebuffers available for a large batch of video cards - we don't have the room to build them all in. Yours is probably among the DO Their Own Thing types of card. Sorry. . | .
