Boots fine, can't log in

Hi, everyone(?).  Thanks very much for the welcome.
I am looking forward to being able to use this distro.
I downloaded the iso file, burned it to cd and it
boots
fine till I reach the login screen.  At that point, 
my keyboard does not seem to be recognized.  I have
noticed this problem on SOME (not all) other CD
distro's and I'm very curious what could be causing
it.

I am using a HP Pavilion 1210 laptop.  Any help with
this is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
