gcc -dumpmachine

RedHat has given fits in the past; If it's not gcc, then it's make, glibc,
... (the developers tend to stick to Debian for builds).

chroot on RedHat has worked well for builds, though.  Instructions on
using the chroot (and on obtaining the chroot environment) are here:

After you add your user (per the instructions) and bind your directories,
you may want to:

	1) edit resolv.conf to suit your locality
	2) edit /etc/apt/sources.conf to reflect a more local mirror,
then
	3) run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade"

After that, you should be ready to build.
