Well, it's always good to have key domains registered for several years
out.  

A post by R. Scott Perry (who knows his stuff) on
http://www.dnsstuff.com/pages/forums.htm suggests that com/net
domains have a base cost to the registrar of US $6.25:  $6 payable to
Verisign and $0.25 to ICANN.  This puts in context businesses like
GoDaddy ($8.20 retail) and Joker.com ($7.20 - $12 retail, depending on
volume).  These folks survive only through high customer volume and
massive automation, and Bad Things often happen when you get close to
expiration.  It's worth some trouble, in my view, acting quickly to 
renew ASAP if you get within a month of expiration.
