That may work, but no tool that I know of uses log in that way. They
all change into the working copy and run "cvs log" without the -d
switch... And that usage fails totally.

You realize that the CVSROOT (the place where someone once did "cvs
init") is still the directory /lnx-bbc/ and not /?

I think I just import the current version in a Darcs repository and
update it on a regular basis -> much less hassle for me.
