Heaven! I don't even know the difference or what they mean - that was just
from inspection of the code. The only commentary I have seen explains that
fs and gs are the fs and gs segment registers (great!)

However, this is the same code that is used successfully in
clusterknoppix-3.6 (and Quantian 0.5.9.2), which do not suffer from the
process segfaults and kernel NULL pointer panics that I am experiencing,
and fiddling with them hasn't helped, so maybe fs and gs always have the
same value anyway, I dunno :)
