It's P3 1GHz box running VMware Server and we have two VMs running. 
We're kinda limited in our ability to set up more physical machines.

Hmm, tricky. I just gave it a try and it works fine for me. Do the
nodes differ in any aspect? (e.g. different CPUs). 

I've noticed that processes may crash upon migration back when they
are incidentally blocking for a system call, but that's obviously not
the case here.
