It is a complete random algorithm and nothing is really checked (load, cpu, memory, latency etc). If you want to migrate between nodes (to and from) all nodes should have both daemons running... Because of the current networking implementation each daemon listens on its own IP address. Therefore you should give the nodes two addresses and use --listen=<ip> when starting the daemons. This is at least how I test on localhost... If you happen to have any Debian packages for a i686, I would happily download them. Your kernel seems much more stable than my 2.6.15.
