Has anyone looked at Lustre?  One of the bragging points is it's used on
some supercomputers.

Here's probably a very silly question, but why do we even need to settle
on a file system?  Why can't there just be a setting somewhere
(under /hpc or /proc), '/hpc/admin/clusterfs_mounts', that contains a
list of clustered fs mounts?  If a file on one of those mounts is
accessed, do a normal 'local' access, otherwise ship the fs call back
home.  Then people can use whatever cluster fs they want.  lustre, cfs,
gfs, pvfs2, afs, etc.
