Todays most stable version is 2.4.26-om1 with no SATA support,  if you
have the choice to buy new hardware, go for SCSI.     

Other alternatives including trying the more recent 2.4.30 patches that
have been posted on the mailinglist ,  

Or start contributing to the 2.6. release by testing a lot :)
