binutils issues with kernel compilation (was: Re: Allocation failures)

Now I'm discovering I can't recompile the kernel to try different  
settings, because of the binutils version that's installed.  We have  
multiple versions of gcc installed, some of which depend on binutils  
 > 2.16.  But trying to build a 2.4.26 OpenMosix kernel with this  
version gives errors:

gcc-2.95 -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.26/include -Wall -Wstrict- 
prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -fomit- 
frame-pointer -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i686   - 
nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=mig  -c -o mig.o mig.c

{standard input}:1803: Error: suffix or operands invalid for `mov'
{standard input}:1815: Error: suffix or operands invalid for `mov'
make[3]: *** [mig.o] Error 1

Has anyone written a patch?  Downgrading binutils to 2.15 isn't  
really an option because it would mean removing some later versions  
of gcc that are required by other software.
