hardware question: 1GBit or not 1Gbit

Hi,

we are thinking about upgrading our cluster (30-40 nodes), and are looking at
Gbit switches. The cheapest ones (48 ports) seem to be around $1000 (?)

Is there some oM tool for checking how the bandwidth affects cluster
performance? 

Any other ideas/ thoughts/ comments on how best to hook up the nodes?
