You need to have all devices necessary for mounting root file system
compiled in the kernel (i.e. support for your disc controller, support
for ext3 file system, as well as support for hard drives), not as
modules. Debian config file does not include these as these are
usually loaded from initrd. However, to make initrd working, Debian
does some kernel patches which are not directly compatible with
openMosix patch.

If you want to save yourself some time, I have the kernel compiled for
openMosix 2.4.24 and the tools package as well at
http://element.math.uwaterloo.ca/~tvinar/openmosix/
