Brian,
For an example, I run a cluster for R-Project software. 11 Nodes.
Different platforms, but all the same kernel. CPUs are Pentium III,
Pentium III Xeon, 4 different speeds depending the node type. R-Project
is installed on only one node. This is the node where users connect to.
They submit their job from this server. Some user are not aware that
this is a cluster. They just know one server... This "master" is a slow
server, to force migration. Physically, this is one of the slowest node
I have, but I forced the speed to be slower than any other node in the
cluster, using "mosctl setspeed 5000" on the master. I force one machine
to be a master, but openMosix does not require a master.
The nodes of an openmosix cluster must not be the same at all, except this :
* The CPU must be of the same architecture. This means that a
Pentium III, 550 Mhz will work OK on a node with another node with
Pentium IV, 3.6 GHz. An alpha CPU server will not work in a farm
of Pentium based server. In fact, binary code must be compatible.
* The Kernel must be the same. Don't mix 2.4 with 2.6. In a cluster,
all kernels must be identical. Ex : 2.4.22-openmosix3smp.
