We use a 3-node system for doing simulation work with radiance (light simulation, radsite.lbl.gov). On our Pentıum-IV Cluster, one run still takes about 4 weeks, and more than a GB per process. So the only alternative would have been a big SMP machine (we sometimes use a Sun). These machines are more expensive, but also more stable (if you want a cluster working stable, you would not only need failover for the nodes, but also for all the network connecting them). I think that for long-term runs, clusters are still difficult or at least not really cheap, because of the difficulty to have stable networks (e.g. no connection problem for four weeks in our case). It is still very powerful if the machines are running anyway (e.g. Desktops in an office) so that processes can be balanced (e.g. my large format postscript job could get processed on the machine of my college who just went to a meeting). If you have 7 PCs running, I wonder how much energy you spend for filtering spam and if it is worth it. Maybe instead of paying the electricity bill, you could buy a new fast machine? Or a new playstation, has exactly seven cores ;-) CU Lars. Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
