So the root filesystem is on /dev/sdb2 instead of /dev/sda2 where I expected it. (The problem can be worse - the 2nd HBA is attached to an external disk cabinet with hot-swappable disks so "/" could be on anything from /dev/sdb2 to /dev/sdm2 !) Ok, obvious solution - use a root=LABEL= or root=UUID= to specify the root in the grub menu.1st. Problem is it doesn't work.
