Apologies for replying to my own post.
After a lot more digging around, I finally figured out how the whole
initrd thing works (eg, how to update drivers, etc), by reading
http://www.openssi.org/cgi-bin/view?page=docs2/1.2/README.edit-ramdisk.
Following the instructions above, please indicate whether I'm missing a
step to update the initrd:
1. uncompress /boot/file.img to file
2. mount file using loop on /mnt
3. cp /lib/modules/2.4.22xxx/kernel/drivers/(what you need).o /mnt/lib
(but only after stripping each file to save space)
4. umount /mnt
5. recompress back into /boot/file.img
Any other steps? Sometimes booting results in errors about /lib/e1000.o
not being found (or, more consistently, errors about SYSFS not being in
the kernel and failing to mount /sysfs), etc, and things hang. I'm
accustomed to the LILO way of always running "lilo" after making a change,
etc. I keep feeling I'm missing a step.
If I simply "make install" in 2.4.22/ssi kernel source, then booting gets
a lot further, but hangs on:
"Creating block devices"
Any ideas? Someone? If feel like I'm the only nignog who cannot get a
stock standard FC2 with openssi 1.2.2 to boot.
