openssi 1.2 and drbd

I've installed openssi 1.2 on a debian 3.1 system. I'm still learning
how everything works and fits together, but I would like for a drbd
shared root filesystem. To that end I've installed the drbd packages,
added drbd to /etc/mkinitrd/modules, and changed the line in
/etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf to read "DRBD_CONFIG=yes". however,
running mkinitrd results in an empty file (0 bytes). changing the
DRBD_CONFIG line to "no" allows the initrd image to be created
successfully but, of course, the drbd filesystem isn't used on a
reboot with this initrd image.

has anyone successfully set up drbd with openssi 1.2, or know why my
mkinitrd command fails to create the image with DRBD_CONFIG=yes?

also, how does the installation of drbd affect the currently installed
root filesystem? eg. my current rootfs on /dev/ida/c0d0p1 contains the
debian install along with the openssi bits, and /dev/drbd/0 mapped to
/dev/ida/c0d1p1 is empty. will the boot process load the original
rootfs and combine it with the drbd rootfs, or will it use solely the
drbd resulting in errors because the filesystem is empty?
