Ok, this is better.  I could not understand why on earth the e1000 
driver would not be in the ramdisk (other
than by user error).

So now it's looking like the version of the e1000 driver we have doesn't 
understand your card.

Could you please try dropping into the shell and seeing if:

1. the e1000 module is loaded into memory
2. does it show up in ifconfig
3, what does dmesg show.
