QEMU provides simple virtualised hardware, which is often easier to deal 
with than real hardware.

For example the QEMU provided NE2000 style NIC works perfectly with 
OpenSSI, as does the QEMU IDE disk controller.

(KVM, if it runs on your machine) should give the same benifits.

For me the other advantage of QEMU is reducing the amount of work 
necessary to continue from a screw up.
