The man is correct. (I gave him quite a bit more background then the rest of you. I'll fill in later.) I used to be running WinXP Pro on this system (http://www.guidoz.com/BigBlue), as I've been a Windows guy for as long as it's been around. (I remember first playing with 3.1... fascinated me that I could see PICTURES while typing. heh.) A month and a half ago, the WinXP HDD died. (My other HDD in my mirror RAID had died less then a week earlier and I had yet to replace it. Grrrr.) So, before attempting a reinstall, I decided I was going to do some updates to BigBlue. (New mobo, likely go dual-proc, etc.) However, I didn't have the time to be down while I waited for new parts and took the time to build it. I needed to run something now... Well, I had heard about the Knoppix Live CD and decided to give it a try. LOVED IT! It ran beautifully on BigBlue, finding every device and drive without a hitch. (Even my USB memory reader for my digi cam.) I was impressed. The last time I had toyed with Linux was around RedHat 6.2-7.0 days. I was able to get RedHat installed and running pretty well, but never ventured to learn much else. After running Knoppix for about a month, I yearned for more a Linux distro that I could actually install to normally (plus have more then 128MB home drive). Being it was based on Debian (and I've always heard good things about Debian), I tried it first. It was a royal pain to get installed on BigBlue. In fact, a good friend of mine (who used to write for LinuxJournal and Lockergnome's Penguin Shell) also was stumped. I decided to go with a simplier distro - SuSE. I've been running it right about 2 weeks, give or take a day. After getting into it, I remembered what I had liked about Debian - apt-get. I quickly found the apt4rpm page (http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/) which eventually lead me to here. =D I've been hardcore in Windows tech support and consulting for over a decade, but consider myself hardly above a Linux n00b. I understand the basics and some of the lingo, but it's frustrating to be a n00b again sometimes. Hence why I appreciate all the help thus far. =) So, if anyone ever has a Windows question, please feel free to pick my brain off-list. I'd consider myself quite "learned" in everything related to Windows (security, software, hardware, networking, etc) except programming. (C/C++ is my next adventure. I do know a bit about Perl.) Be happy to help out with something if I could. ;) -- Peace. ~G On Thu, 23 Sep 2004 20:41:09 +0200, Richard Bos <[email protected]> wrote: > Op donderdag 23 september 2004 20:19, schreef Panu Matilainen: > > > I used to ship aptrpm till I changed it to just apt..., and that is about > > > a long time ago.
