the ESR versions of Firefox and Thunderbird requiring especially with a 
switch to a more recent ESR version also updated build tool versions 
like rustc and cargo.

These are handled by a dedicated source packages to not replace the 
available versions in the stable and old-stable release.

For the next round of FF and TB ESR versions this has been done with

So maybe a backport isn't really needed I think.

The advice of Alexander to get in touch with the usual package 
maintainers is something that you Bruce should do as a first step!
