Just changing the first line to list the packages you would like to update 
from backports is probably preferable:

Package: linux-image-amd64
Pin: release n=bookworm-backports
Pin-Priority: 600

If that file is edited with care, that probably does not qualify as hacking, 
but thanks for the comment, I was also irritated by that advice.
