Andrew, thank you for discovering and reporting this.  You and Harald
are right that installing the backport kernel of an upcoming release
often reveals issues that will affect the upcoming oldstable2stable
upgrade.  In other words, I agree with your assessment and reproducer,
and I'd imagine a lot of people would appreciate knowing about in
advance, so maybe also file a bug to have this added to the Release
Notes for our upcoming release?

Additionally, I suspect the wiki should be updated, and I'm guessing the
Release Notes might point to the wiki for documentation of defensive
strategies and workarounds.
