How exactly does that follow? What is this inherent, spam-related advantage
of Mailman 2.1.2 over our Smartlist on l.d.o?

Don't ge me wrong, I have reasons to hate Smarlist, probably much more than
you do. But unsupported assertions don't exactly tend to fix any issues.
