Please read the "known bugs" section on http://pocketworkstation.org,
the device files inside your debroot don't work. Make sure that it's type
ext2 or ext3, and mounted with device files enabled.

I'll need to make the installer detect this.

That could be related - but if the error persists, try usin
<Fn>-<Shift>-<Q> to exit the VNC client, or run "killall Xvnc" from the
shell.
