The firmware detection for the Intel SOF family is hardcoded in the 
installer.

Recently I updated the firmware detection for the live-images [1], to 
have automatic detection, but I might have missed some other modules in 
newer folders.

When is the sound missing/broken: only during the installer, or also 
after the installation has completed (or within the live environment)?

Could you try with one of the recent Debian live images?
