As mentioned in my reply to [1] that looked like a good candidate for
spu indeed. Feel free to go prepare a trixie branch backporting that
change (or just a patch), and to open a pu request (reportbug should
X-Debbugs-Cc the maintainer, but bonus points if debian-boot@ and/or
kibi@ gets a copy).
