Bug#703118: do not show randomly generated avatar icons if not avatar exists

This can be accomplished by replacing d=retro in the avatar URL, and
using the avatar image as the background of a <div> tag instead of an
actual <img> tag, so unexisting avatars returning 404 will not be
displayed by browsers as "broken image" icons (the <div> tag will just
have no background).
