Hah,  optimist ;)

These devices have recently gained mainline support for a few of their
peripherals as they are reused on the am335x (beaglebone), but I would
be very (positive) surprised if TI would do any serious upstream work
for them in the future, they are basically legacy - I know as I'm stuck
on a dm8168 project :/

Unless you need massive video encode performance, I would suggest you
look elsewhere - E.G. iMX6 or similar.
