 Turns a standard Javascript RegExp into a tree with the following
 token types: ROOT, GROUP, POSITION, SET, RANGE, REPETITION, REFERENCE,
 CHAR.  Follows the Javascript regular expression syntax with the
 following exceptions which are currently unsupported:

  - Unicode property escapes: \p and \P
  - Named groups: (?<group>) and \k<group>
  - Negative lookbehind assertions: (?<=) and (?<!)
