Actually you get that for free if you use a dbus interface.

Speaking of dbus, there might be a better alternative: simply monitor 
systemd's dbus (or varlink, I presume) interface. If a timer-started 
unit [or possibly any other system unit] fails, you can just pull its 
log from the journal and send the last five minutes' worth via email, or 
whatever other notification mechanism you want.

No cron/timer-specific mechanism, modification to your timer units, 
special privileges, … required.
