I'd regard this as a perfectly valid method.  You are in the
fantastic situation to have a very close connection to your users -
Your children will probably very open to you about their likes /

I think the first possible answer to this "open" question you have
given above yourself.

I admit I refuse to use IRC to not add an additional communication channel
which IMHO just drains additional time from my rare spare time.  So it
would be nice to perhaps copy-n-paste important snippets from the logs
(not for me personally, but for other people who might share my habit).
