My guess is that your first trial left cdd-common in some undefined
state.  The current cdd-common which replaces the old one just provides
some symlinks to tools in blends-commons to remain compatibility with
previous versions.  So if upgrading cdd-common should have had the same
effect as purging the old one (while purging is fine in most cases).

But as I said: I'll try to reproduce the problem once I have access to
a stable machine.
