I am reporting a reproducible multi-second delay when launching applications
from the KDE Plasma application launcher in an X11 session.
--STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Step 1) Log into a KDE Plasma X11 session.
Step 2) Open the KDE application launcher.
Step 3) Select "System Settings" and launch it by clicking its launcher entry.
Step 4) Observe the time between activating the launcher entry and the
application
window appearing.
Step 5) Close System Settings.
Step 6) Open Konsole.
Step 7) Launch the same application directly with:
systemsettings
Step 8) Compare the startup behavior.
Step 9) Repeat the same comparison with Dolphin.
--OBSERVED RESULT
When System Settings is launched by clicking its icon in the KDE application
launcher, there is a reproducible multi-second delay before the window appears.
For comparison:
- X11, KDE application launcher: approximately 3 seconds
- X11, Konsole (`systemsettings`): approximately 0.5 seconds
- Wayland, KDE application launcher: no noticeable delay
When the same application is launched from Konsole using `systemsettings`,
there is still a noticeable delay, but it is significantly shorter,
approximately 0.5 seconds.
The same difference is reproducible with Dolphin.
The issue is therefore not limited to a single application. System Settings
and Dolphin are the applications I have tested so far. Other applications
launched through the KDE application launcher may also be affected.
--EXPECTED RESULT
Applications launched through the KDE application launcher should appear
and become usable without a noticeable multi-second delay.
The startup behavior when launching applications from the KDE application
launcher in an X11 session should be comparable to the behavior observed
when launching the same applications from the KDE application launcher
in a Wayland session.
--ADDITIONAL TESTING
I performed the same launcher-based test in both X11 and Wayland sessions.
The additional multi-second delay is reproducible in X11 but not in Wayland.
KWin compositing was also tested separately. Disabling compositing with:
kwriteconfig6 --file kwinrc \
--group Compositing \
--key Enabled false
and logging into the Plasma session again makes application startup somewhat
faster, but does not completely eliminate the delay.
This suggests that the problem may involve the interaction between the
application launcher, X11, and the compositor, but I cannot determine the
exact cause.
The NVIDIA graphics driver was completely removed and reinstalled during
troubleshooting. This did not resolve the problem.
The problem was also tested with older kernel versions. This did not resolve
the problem.
The issue was initially investigated as a possible KDE/Plasma issue:

KDE requested that the issue be reported to Debian because the Plasma version
shipped in Debian 13 is no longer supported upstream.

The system uses a minimal KDE installation without automatically installing
unnecessary Recommends packages.
