Without speaking to the core of the issue here, I will point out that in
this analogy, yes, 'we' (wider society) do ban knives when the risk
outweighs the benefit.

I can think of, off the top of my head, schools, courthouses/government
buildings, company workplace locations, polling sites, airports, and bars.
