Delivered-To: [email protected]

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : puttymod
  Version         : 0.83+puttymod1
  Upstream Author : Darth Vader <[email protected]> (personal fork;
                     upstream PuTTY by Simon Tatham and contributors)
* URL             : https://github.com/iam-darth-vader/puttymod
* License         : MIT
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : GTK SSH/Telnet client, PuTTY with local UX patches

PuTTyMOD is a personal fork of PuTTY, the free SSH and Telnet client.
All protocol/crypto/core code is unmodified upstream PuTTY; on top of
that base this fork adds a substantial set of local usability
features, all implemented from scratch rather than being a cosmetic
reskin:

 * Runtime interface translation into 25 languages (own I_() lookup
   table system, not gettext), picked from a dedicated Design/Language
   settings panel with an "Apply & Restart" button that switches the
   running UI immediately. Right-to-left languages (Arabic, Hebrew)
   render correctly via Pango bidi with no special-casing needed.
 * Per-session OS/distro detection: a pre-auth SSH banner probe
   classifies the remote host into one of ~38 distro/vendor icons,
   shown in the saved-sessions list with a hand-painted brand-colour
   gradient behind each row.
 * Live online/offline status dots per saved session, checked
   asynchronously (TCP connect + real SSH banner read, to correctly
   handle shared-IP hosting setups where a bare TCP check gives false
   positives) without blocking the UI.
 * 16 built-in one-click colour theme presets (Dracula, Nord,
   Solarized, Gruvbox, Tokyo Night, Catppuccin, and others) plus
   user-saved custom presets, applied to both the settings dialog and
   the terminal's own colours in one click.
 * A whole profile-independent "Design" settings section (terminal
   appearance, dialog window chrome/colours/opacity, language) applied
   identically across every saved session, with translucent dialog
   windows where a compositor is available.
 * AES-256-CBC encrypted auto-login password storage, keyed per Unix
   user, never displayed once saved.
 * Password-protected session export/import as self-describing ".pex"
   files (Argon2id-derived key, AES-256-CBC), with its own registered
   MIME type and icon set, all-or-nothing import with collision
   detection.
 * Session-list UX polish: search/filter, inline save/load/delete
   confirmation, first-run welcome dialog with sensible defaults.

It is built from the same upstream PuTTY source and installs alongside
the official putty package rather than replacing it: only the GUI
client is shipped, as /usr/bin/puttymod, so it never touches any file
the putty/putty-tools packages own (plink, pscp, psftp, puttygen,
pageant, or /usr/bin/putty itself), and both can be installed at the
same time.

I intend to maintain this package myself and am looking for a sponsor
to review and upload it.

No, Debian doesn't need personal forks of security-sensitive software=20
published by fresh anonymous accounts an hour before submitting them to=20
